Understanding football sizes: a quick guide

Footballs are made in a variety of weights and sizes, categorised from 1 to 5. The appropriate choice depends on factors like age, skill, and the intended use, including league rules and coaching methods.

Size 5

Intended for players aged twelve and older, size 5 footballs, measuring 68-70cm in circumference and weighing 410-450g, are the internationally recognised standard used in the top professional leagues and tournaments worldwide. They’re the same models the pros play with.

Size 4

This ball is slightly smaller and lighter than a size 5, with a circumference of 63-66cm and a weight of approximately 350-390g. Ideal for youth players aged eight to twelve, it serves as the crucial final step before players transition to the standard size 5 football used in adult play.

Size 3

For players under eight, this ball (58-61cm circumference, 310-340g) builds beginner confidence and fundamental skills. It also helps more experienced players refine technique.

Size 1 & Size 2

Often referred to as mini or skills balls, these small footballs are popular for casual play and their convenient size, and are also used for practicing basic control techniques. Their dimensions and weight can vary significantly between manufactures due to a lack of official standards.
